Music Journal, Alumni Gathering, OMS CD On The Way

Wow.  What a weekend of music, actually starting on Wednesday with one of the best guitar pickers I’ve seen in a while, Larry Keel at Proud Larry’s.  On Thursday, Rocket 88 with George McConnell at Two Stick did not disappoint.  After amazing shows from Hundred Year Flood and Blue Mountain Friday night at Larry’s, I really began to feel spoiled, knowing that we still had Mayhem String Band to see on Saturday night.  What’s wild is that there were so many great options all weekend that I could have gone to a different show each night and been just as well off.  (Did I really just miss a visit from Soul Rebel Brass Band Friday night?)  It was one of those weekends that make me thank God that I’m an Oxonian.

Not much music to speak of this week, but if you’re in the Oxford area Tuesday evening, go to The Library for the Ole Miss Alumni Association’s gathering.  There will be an open bar for all active members. Rhes Low, owner of Market Rhes, will provide appetizers. If you need to renew your membership or check your membership status, contact the office at records@alumni.olemiss.edu or call 915-7375.  You may also check or join at www.olemissalumni.com/membership/active.asp.

After enjoying eight months of writing here and receiving so much great feedback and encouragement from readers, I’m going to be sending a thank you gift to my fellow music fans.  I’ll be putting together a compilation CD over the next month or so, getting permission from artists, and hopefully shipping the CD in January for free to anyone who wants it.  I will limit the content of the CD to my favorite music from 2007.  The shipping and the CD will be free to anyone who simply sends their address to daniel@oxfordmusicsnob.com with “Best of 2007 CD” in the subject line.

Vacation Time

No, I did not get lost in Memphis on my way back from the Bright Eyes show on Tuesday.  I’m doing a little beach vacation this week and will be back to posting next week.

I caught some great shows over the weekend:  Michael Franti at the New Daisy on Friday, Rocket 88 with George McConnell at Larry’s and Tate Moore at Jubilee on Saturday.

Tonight, EOTO (Travis and Hann of String Cheese) will be at Two Stick, but first, I’m going to catch a bit of the 10th Anniversary Show at Ajax featuring Duff Dorrough, Lamar Sorrento and guests.

I’m going to be gone all week but am looking forward to getting back for Karl Denson Trio (KD3) on Friday night at Proud Larry’s.

It was the Tate Moore show this weekend.  A great Kudzu Kings show under the stars in Taylor early Friday night set the tone for the weekend.  The night continued with Rocket 88 at Jubilee and Mayhem String Band at Two Stick.  Both shows had great crowds and great energy.

Saturday, after the robbery that was the Ole Miss/Alabama game, Tate took the stage to help us forget what we had witnessed on the field.  Duff Dorrough joined Tate and the Cosmic Door on stage for the entire show and was a great addition.  The crowd started slow, but picked up pretty quick and ended up being great.  It’s cool to see a legend like Duff share the stage with artists that he had such an influence on during his years with The Tangents.

Last night’s Rocket 88 show at Two Stick with guest George McConnell was the perfect way to kick off a game weekend.  It was a great mix of Rocket 88 and Beanland originals with a couple great covers thrown in.

Rocket 88 will play Jubilee tonight, and George will join them again next Saturday on the Proud Larry’s stage.

Caught Amy LaVere at Two Stick and a little bit of Rocky Mountain Rhythm Bums next door a Parrish’s.  Amy was amazing as always, but the crowd was lackluster.

Tonight, I’m planning to see Tate Moore at Parrish’s and Last Waltz Ensemble at Proud Larry’s.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow night’s Red Stick Ramblers show.  They’re one of my favorite bands that comes through Oxford on a semi-regular basis.

We saw Maria y el Sol last night at Two Stick.  Meg and I put our new salsa skills to use and did ok I think.

Tonight’s pick is an easy one for me; Amy LaVere will be at Two Stick.  I’d also like to see The Disclaimers at Proud Larry’s.   They’re doing a dinner show tonight and next Thursday.

I’m also going to get to go to Thacker Mountain Radio for the first time this season.  Music on this week’s show will be Davis Coen (Charleston, SC) and Tricia Walker (Minnesota).   The author is Gerard Helferich.

Here’s the Amy LaVere video I’ve featured here before.

I had a restless night on Friday, bouncing from show to show.   I saw Mayhem String Band at Larry’s, Aaron Hall Band at Jubilee, and Kenny Brown at Two Stick (twice).  A smorgasbord of music, for sure.

Saturday night was a one-show-only night as I settled in for Jason Isbell at Proud Larry’s.  I was still in recovery mode from the previous night at first and was only digging the slow stuff.  I came around after an hour or so though and was loving it all.  Isbell really rocked out and played more of his Drive By Truckers stuff than expected.  Great show.

I didn’t get to go to the Ford Center tonight for the Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as I had hoped.  A man can only do so much.  I’m sure it was a great show, but the pitiful schedule at the Ford Center of late has gotten me out of the habit of going there.

This week, I’m really looking forward to Aaron Hall’s Wednesday show, the last of his September residency at Proud Larry’s.  He’s going to be backed by a gospel choir (clear the stage!).

I had plans to see a couple bands last night but was unable to pull myself away from Rocket 88 at Parrish’s.  Amazing show with a great crowd.

Tonight’s Options (Friday, September 21):

Mayhem String Band – Proud Larry’s
Tate Moore at happy hour and Aaron Hall Band at night - Jubilee
Kenny Brown Band – Two Stick
Scott Albert Johnson – Courthouse Lawn (5:30) and The Powerhouse (9:00)

My plan:

Mayhem for sure, but I’d love to see a couple of the others as well.
