Dead Gaze

lo-fi psych tunes from Jackson, MS. This is our good friend Cole Furlow’s transcendent bedroom recording project, now available for public consumption via live band. DEAD GAZE have a forthcoming cassette to be released on Mirror Universe (home of Washed Out, Toro y Moi, etc). Cole has also released a shitton of free music on their Myspace and on the Cats Purring blog.

JIMBO MATHUS ANNOUNCES LINEUP FOR 2009 HILLBILLY HAYRIDE

ON FRIDAY, NOV. 6, 2009 AT THE LYRIC THEATER IN OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – (OCTOBER 14, 2009)  Mississippi entertainer Jimbo Mathus has announced that Shannon McNally & Hot Sauce, Rocket 88, and Wolf Ruffin will be the featured guests on this year’s HILLBILLY HAYRIDE, an annual fall  showcase of Oxford-area musical talent.

Guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and producer Jimbo Mathus grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He first caught the public’s ear in the 1990’s with the hyper-ragtime vaudeville act, The Squirrel Nut Zippers. Since then, hes released many recordings of his own in a style he describes as Mississippi Music. “Basically,” Mathus says, “I combine the myriad styles of deep roots music in a type of alchemy. Blues, country, gospel and soul all go into the equation equally.”

Mathus, backed by his band, TRI-STATE COALITION, will perform songs from his current compact disc, JIMMY THE KID, internationally released this fall on Oxford-based indie label, Hill Country Records.  McNally and her band, HOT SAUCE, will peform songs from her new release, COLDWATER, which is receiving critical acclaim. Both COLDWATER and JIMMY THE KID were produced by the late Jim Dickinson.

Oxford roots-rock band, ROCKET 88, will take the stage at 9:45 , and Sardis, Mississippi, country-risque songwriter, WOLF RUFFIN, will perform songs from his debut record, GREATEST HITS, beginning at 9 o’clock with his band RUFFIN READY RHTHYM BOYS.  Guest vocalists, HONKY TONK ANGELS, will also be on hand as the background singers for Mathus and company.

In addition, Mathus and band will present an acoustic preview of the 2009 HILLBILLY HAYRIDE on Thursday, Nov. 5th at THACKER MOUNTAIN RADIO SHOW, at 6 p.m. at Off-Square Books in Oxford.

Tickets  for the 2009 HLLBILLY HAYRIDE are $10 at the door. Ages 18 and up will be admitted. The Lyric Theater is located at 1109 Van Buren Ave., Oxford, Miss.

Kathryn Scheldt is a singer-songwriter from Fairhope, Ala. and the author of two books on guitar playing.
