Oxford Music Snob

If music be the food of love, play on. – Shakespeare

Oxford, MS

Oxford is the home of Music Snob, so live show reviews will reflect that.

Oxford is a college town, the home of Ole Miss.  The town has had a great music scene for quite some time.  Twenty-five years ago, The Tangents ruled the roost.  The presence of great blues musicians such as R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough helped fuel a scene that saw the birth of groundbreaking bands like Beanland and The Hilltops in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  Bands such as Blue Mountain, The Cooters and Kudzu Kings carried the town into the millineum.  The current scene in 2007 is an eclectic mix of blues (Kenny Brown, Burnside Exploration), soul (Wiley and the Checkmates), bluegrass (Mayhem String Band), jam (Daybreakdown), latin (Maria y el Sol), punk (Tyler Keith and the Preacher’s Kids, The Cooters), singer/song writer (Tate Moore, Sanders Bohlke), and roots rock-and-roll (Cary Hudson, Rocket 88).

You need to list “The Neckbones” as one of the many historic bands from Oxford. They were around from ’92 through ’97 in and arounf O-town (Memphis too). Ask Tyler Keith, he was one of their lead guitar players….; They had big crowds for awhile and went around the country touring. They played with Blue Mountain a few times too,,,,,,

    Show some respect

there’s alot of musicians in oxford who deserve praise, but the best way to show our support for them is by going to their shows in our town, not debating who should be on a list made by any of us. i havent seen any oxford musicians making a list of any kind, maybe because they’re more concerned about entertaining us!

  5. On Monday June 1, Minneapolis based stringband Pert Near Sandstone will play Proud Larry’s in Oxford, Mississippi.

Pert Near Sandstone is becoming a force in the national roots music scene. For the last two years these young purveyors of American stringband music have been traveling the country through clubs, theaters and festivals. Their unique old-time approach and fresh dynamic sound has brought them on tours from coast to coast, and international recognition on the famous radio program, A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.

Although they play acoustic instruments, this is modern music. Their energy and vigor has given them rapid growth where rock bands once thrived, and the college circuit is learning the virtue of fiddle tunes. Pert Near Sandstone doesn’t stop there – they bring the fire wherever they play, engaging crowds of all ages and musical persuasions. You don’t want to miss their show!
